Abijah Howard Carpenter was born on 8 November 1803 in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. He died on 31 October 1884 at the age of 80 in Victory Township, Guthrie County, Iowa. According to Howard Carpenter, Abijah once lived in (and perhaps built) the house in Marshfield, Vermont owned in 1940 by Alvi T. Davis, and he owned and operated the village sawmill during the 1850's. That he lived in the mill house is confirmed in an 1842 deed of the mill lot from W.A. Martin to Israel Cutting. (The A.T. Davis house may have been known as "the mill house", as it is known that Truman Pitkin also lived there when he owned the mill. The present mill house probably didn't exist until at least 1850, as it is reputed to have been built by Eli Pitkin.) Abijah moved to Guthrie Iowa sometime before 1860 with his wife and eight children. None of them ever returned. The following letter was written from Abijah's granddaughter, Myra Russell to Abijah's son, George N. Carpenter of Cabot, regarding the disposition of Abijah's estate: "Guthrie Center, Iowa, April 5th 1894, Dear Uncle George, I will write a few lines in regard to Grandfathers estate it has laid about nine years without being settled, Our folks are trying to have it settled now. Charles Howard Carpenter was born on 15 August 1911 in Cabot, Vermont. He died on 22 March 1981 at the age of 69 in Berlin, Vermont. Charles grew up on his father's farm in Cabot. At the time of his mother's death in 1930, Charles was 19 years old, and the only child remaining at home. During the depression he worked for a while at the Roger's store in Cabot Village, in order to earn some cash with which to help make ends meet on the farm. Charles and his brother George enjoyed sugaring on a small scale when they were young, and during the depression, Howard bought some sugaring equipment to try to add to the farm income. Charles built a new sugarhouse in 1948 in a very small stand of sugar trees northwest of the farmhouse, and sugared there until 1958. While Charles worked for his father, the barn was remodeled several times and the dairy herd was expanded to about 35 head of Jerseys. He was active in the Farm Bureau for a number of years, and his work for that organization allowed him to meet farmers all over central Vermont. Many of these acquaintances developed into lasting friendships. After the death of their father in 1953, Charles and his sister, Flora, operated the farm as partners until his marriage to Barbara Blachly in 1958. Barbara lived on an abandoned farm adjacent to the Carpenter farm. Charles and Barbara worked very hard to bring her run down farm into a condition which would support a family. During their first few years there, while raising two girls, they cleared the fields of rocks and trees, brought in tons of chicken manure to fertilize the fields, built a shop, a sugarhouse, and a new dairy barn, expanded the house, purchased more land, and increased the size of their dairy herd from six to twelve cows. He enjoyed a diversified work schedule which included sugaring, logging, dairying, and antiquing. Throughout his life, Charles enjoyed buying and selling antiques, and after his marriage he managed to develop this interest into a lucrative hobby. He and Barbara once owned the Lower Cabot Schoolhouse which they filled with antiques and then held an auction. Antiques became an important component of the family's income, and of the methods and means by which their work was done. Over the years, Charles and Barbara experimented many times with antiquated farm equipment, and enjoyed doing things the old fashioned way. Much of the farmwork was done with horses until several years after Charles died. He was an active member of the Cabot Historical Society, and was responsible for much of the restoration of the West Hill School. He served a term as director of the Washington Electric Co-operative and was also a member of the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers Association. Charles was social, and always enjoyed participating in community activities. The family usually had a float in the fourth of July parades in Cabot, and once in Plainfield. Parents: Howard Hastings Carpenter and Lillian B. Shepard.

Spouse: Barbara Blachly. Barbara Blachly and Charles Howard Carpenter were married on 6 August 1958 in Barre, Vermont. Children were: Mary Adele Carpenter, Susan Carpenter.
