A cemetery record for William Dorman of Co. D. 7th Regt. RI Volunteers shows a buriel in the St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Coventry, RI. Date of death: Jan 11, 1883. Marble stone 20" by 17" Last seen in 1995. William's occupation was not recorded on the birth record of his daughter Mary in 1859. An Ancestry.com enlistment record dates his original enlistment to Sept 17, 1861.

The 1870 census of Warwick, RI, lists William as head of household, aged 45, born in Ireland, real estate valued at $400. His occupation is listed as "works on farm." Dorman, 15, born Warwick, single, speeder tender, cot., daugher Anna Dorman, aged 3 months, born Warwick. William Augustine Dorman34 was born on 12 July 1886 in North Kingston, Rhode Island. He died on 28 December 1933 at the age of 47 at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The principal cause of William's death was given on his death record as "acute dilatation of the stomach," with acute appendicitis and appendectomy listed as contributing causes. He was buried on 29 December 1933 in Elm Grove Cemetery, North Kingston, Rhode Island. Burial Plot: Section N4, Map 00032b No stone. Clo Pitkin remembers of her father: "William Dorman was born into an Irish Catholic family in Rhode Island. I don't know much about my father because he died shortly after I was born. My mother told some stories about him but found it very painful to remember the time my brother died and so did not ever tell me much of importance. I surmise that (his) family did not enjoy the comforts that the Heilborns had. Bill served in World War One in the infantry. He kept a daily record of his service and apparently spent much time on the front lines in Europe. It must have been between 1920 and 1923 that he courted Marjorie Heilborn. He was a handsome man and people spoke of him as kind and gentle. In 1923 he and Marjorie were married. They lived with Marjorie's parents and Bill worked with Dr. Heilborn. I am under that impression that since Charles T Heilborn Jr. did not have an interest in being a chiropodist or running the shoe store, Bill was being groomed to take over the business. I remember hearing that my father had seriously considered going into the priesthood at one time. I know that he was a devout Catholic. He had a good sense of humor and apparently enjoyed people. From all the pictures of Bill Dorman and his son Billy he seems to have been a good and loving father and extremely proud of his son. When young Billy died at the age of 8, Bill was unable to cope with his loss. He sought comfort in the Catholic church and went on retreats to find answers and strength. I assume he was not able to give much support to anyone else. He died a year later of complications from an appendectomy. I believe my mother felt that he had abandoned her. He is known to me only through pictures and stories my mother told me. She always led me to believe that my father loved me very much and somehow I always pictured him in heaven watching over us."
William had been a Chiropodist for 22 years at the time of his death, and was a chiropodist at the time of his induction into the army in April 1918. He was appointed Corporal in November of that year after having been in France for five months. He fought at the defense of the center sector at Haute Alsace, at the battle of Molleville Farm, the attack on Bois d. Ormont, Battle of the Grand Montague, capture of Etraye Ridge, and the attack on Bois Belleu. On October 12, 1918, he wrote in his journal "Went into battle on the Verdun front. Terrible slaughter. Many of our men wounded and killed." after five days of heavy artillery fire the company was again engaged in a terrible battle on the sixteenth. On the seventeenth he wrote; "Very little of Co. left. Being relieved 10 tonight." And the following day; "Back at rest camp. Poor little Co. Very few of us left. Thank God I came out safe." He returned to the United States in May, 1919 and was honorably discharged. He authored a booklet, "The Truth about Foot Troubles, Their Cause Cure and Prevention," published on August 12, 1933.
Obituary in "Foot News," a publication of the Rhode Island Chiropodists' Society: "Dr. William Dorman, age 47, prominent chiropodist of Providence, Rhode Island, died December 28th, 1933 after a brief illness. Dr. Dorman was recognized by members of the profession as a man of sterling character, who with his soft spoken mannerisms won admiration from all who knew him. He was a charter member of the Rhode Island Chiropodist Society and a member of the National Association of Chiropodists. He was a believer of firm convictions and above all, maintained that "honesty was the best policy." Dr. Dorman was connected with Dr. Charles T. Heilborn's office for many years, one of the oldest establishments in Providence. He was a member of the American Legion, Richard Dennis Post. His church membership was St. Brenden's Church, Riverside, R. I."
