Hello, I just came upon your website when I Googled my mother's name, Marjorie Forbes Saunders, and I want to make a correction to page P2773 on her grandmother, Agnes McKelvey. On her entry it says that she was married to Alex Guy and had a child named James Alexander Guy. The fact is she was married to Eli King and had nine children, including my grandmother, Martha King and her brother, William McKelvey King. It was this William, or "Will" as you have him, who had a son named James Alexander "Alec" KING. I don't know where Alex Guy came from, except that my grandmother's youngest sister, Mabel Elizabeth King, married Samuel Guy. Perhaps Alex Guy was his father or you got Agnes's father, Alexander McKelvey, mixed up with her husband somehow. I have rather extensive files on this family, agreeing almost 100% with what you have, and would be happy to share them with you. My mother, Marjorie Naomi Forbes, was born in Island Pond, Vermont, and married my father, Paul A. Saunders, who was Principal of Island Pond High School. Scales "at sea" as a son of Sidney. The following note was originally appended by Fred Pitkin to John Scales the uncle of Sidney Scales. However, having learned that John C. Scales was "at sea", and knowing that his younger brother lived (perhaps in the same circumstance with John C.) in Exeter, Maine, I have moved the note here. Further research may show that the Uncle John (to whom the note was originally appended) was also living in Maine, and may have been a guardian to John C. and Charles: "John was said to have settled in Maine. He was also said to have been a sailor. Olive Severance Pitkin had a whale's tooth which had been given to her mother by John. Alison Ceplikas has an Ostrich egg which also came from John and has been passed down through the family. John is said to have obtained these items on his sea trips." John's marriage record indicates he was a machinist by trade. His naval enlistment records indicate he was 5 feet 6 inches tall and of light complexion. During his time in Lowell, he seems to have boarded in houses owned by the corporation for which he worked. In 1865 he was living in the household of his son Francis. He also lived at various times in Montpelier and St. Johnsbury, Vermont, and Sherbrook, Canada. Each of these towns had Iron foundries. His first wife, Arathusa, may have died in Sherbrooke. He seems to have married a second time to Susan Nash (born 1813), with whom he had at least one child in 1850. Susan died in 1862. Sidney died of "congestion of the brain." "To the Honorable theJudge of the Probate Court in and for the County of Middlesex respectfully represents Francis R. Scales of Lowell in the County of Middlesex that Sidney A. Farrington's Cabot Carriage Shop on the other side of the river William Scales built in 1826 a blacksmith shop and small foundry where cauldrons, 5-pail kettles, cog wheels and other iron castings were made. Mr. Scales will be remembered by all who ever got to know him as a very nice man, but not one of the smoothest of workmen!" He settled in Boscowen, New Hampshire, and moved to Cabot, Vermont in 1812.
