John Lance Severance was born on 14 August 1824 in Cabot, Vermont. John's birth record gives his name as John Dow Severance. He died on 11 August 1911 at the age of 86 in Marshfield, Vermont. He was buried at Durant Cemetery in Cabot, Vermont. John was a farmer and carpenter in Cabot until about 1880. The family moved to Marshfield at that time, first to the Smith farm, and later to the village, where he continued working as a carpenter. He lost one eye while shingling. He also had a short leg as a result of it being broken when he was carrying one end of a long timber which was dropped by the man at the other end. John had a bad limp thereafter. In 1884, the family moved to Danielsonville, Connecticut where John worked in a textile mill for two years. The youngest of their children, Olive, married while they were there. When they returned to Marshfield they moved into the Bucklin house (the last house on the Cabot road leaving the village).

After the death of his wife, John lived for his last year with his daughter and son-in-law Clara and Warren Fifield at their farm near Plainfield village. Parents: Rufus Severance and Susan Lance.
