She was born January 18, 1930 in Marshfield, Vermont, daughter of Clarence and Amy (Cameron) Pitkin. She graduated from Brattleboro (VT) High School, Class of 1947, and from Bryant College in Providence, RI, in 1949. On June 18, 1949, Irene and Cleland D. Cochrane, Jr were married. Cleland predeceased her on November 23, 1999. Irene was also predeceased by her brother Francis Pitkin in April 2000. She was employed by Fayscott-Landis Company in Dexter from 1956 - 1992. Irene also owned and operated Cochrane's TLC Dog Grooming from 1980 - 2003. She was a 50-year member of Wassookeag Chapter #44 Order of The Eastern Star, where she served as Past Worthy Matron, Organist, and held the chair of Esther. She was past president of the Star Club. She was an active member of the T.R.O.T. Club (Trail Riders of Today), the North Country Riding Club, and served on the Board of Directors of the Maine State Appaloosa Horse Club. She was a volunteer for Meals for ME, belonged to the Dexter Sunshine Club, the Community Choir, and was named Sports Mother of the Year in 1970. Irene was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her children, Terry and husband Bruce Locke of Kennebunk, Me., Cleland "Butch" Cochrane, III and wife Debbie of Blackstone, MA, Karen Collins and husband John "Wes" of Dover,NH; Granddaughters, Kristie and husband Doug Mark of Washington, D.C., Kelli Locke of Portland, Me., Jessica Currier of Dover, NH., Jill Cochrane of Alexandria, VA., and Gabrielle Cochrane of Blackstone, MA; great grandson, Bryce Currier-Wessling of Dover, NH; a special “daughter”, Ramona Goulette of San Diego, CA; Sisters-in-law, Brenda Orne of OH, and Jean Skib of MD; an aunt, Dorothea Lampman of Clearwater, FL; several nieces, nephews, friends and fellow club members. She will be greatly missed by her horses, T.C. and Danny Boy, and her dogs,Annie and Zoey.

Friends may call from 6-9 P.M. for visiting hours Tuesday July 22, 2003 at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main Street, Dexter. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday July 23, 2003 at the Dexter United Methodist Church with Pastor Lois Field officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Marshfield, VT.

James Pitkin was born on 17 December 1738. He died in 1762 at the age of 24. James never married. He was appointed Ensign in the regiment commanded by Maj.-Gen. Phineas Lyman of Suffield, Connecticut, raised for the French War, and ordered to Canada in 1760. He was also Ensign in a regiment commanded by Lieut.-Col. Israel Putnam, raised for the same purpose in 1762. He also went with Col. Putnam in the Spanish War to "the Havanna" in 1762, and died there of yellow fever. Parents: Capt. James Pitkin was born on 26 January 1795 in Marshfield, Vermont. He died in 1872 at the age of 77. He was buried at Eaton Cemetery in Marshfield, Vermont. James was the second child to be born in the town of Marshfield. Except for a few years living in Peacham when he was a teen, he spent his entire life on his father's farm. When James Cassidy acquired the farm many years later, he and his wife found many old documents of the Pitkin family in the attic of the house, which documents they subsequently burned.

James served at least one year as High Bailiff of Washington County about 1840.

He was Marshfield's delegate to the Vermont Constitutional Convention of 1843.

Jane Emily Pitkin was born on 23 March 1926 in Hyde Park, Vermont. She died on 17 August 2007 at the age of 81 in Berlin, Vermont. Jane grew up in Barre and Plainfield, Vermont, graduating as valedictorian of her high school class. She graduated from Goddard College in 1948 after her marriage. Tom and Jane then moved to New York City before travelling by ship to Italy in 1950. There Jane taught English and studied at the University and Tom studied Renaissance art. They then moved to Morrocco where they applied for jobs building the Strategic Air Command Air Force bases. They managed to save some money and eventually set out for Europe in their car. They lived in Sweden for 9 months, and later moved to Denmark for 4 years. Jane studied planning at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen. About 1956 they returned to Plainfield, and shortly thereafter moved into the house in Marshfield Village formerly owned by Jane's grandmother, Olive. Tom was employed for a while at Goddard College and Jane worked as a planner. In 1971 the family moved to Alicante, Spain for a number of years where Tom worked at his career as an artist. They returned to Marshfield briefly before moving to American Samoa where he was employed at the Community College. In about 1980 they moved to Honolulu, Hawaii where they stayed permanently. Jane continued to work as a planner, finally for the Hawaiin National Guard.
In 1945, Jane was involved in an automobile accident in Florida after which she was in a coma for two weeks. The accident permanently affected her sense of balance and her sensory perception in one hand. The following is part of a letter home written by Helen Pitkin on February 11 as Jane was emerging from her coma.
"Dear Boys, This will probably be short because I want to get it into tonight’s mail. Jane talked with her lips about an hour ago. She recognized me. When Dr. Dunham asked if daddy was her father she said, "He thinks he is." . . . things look much better. She drank water through a tube. . . .Lovingly, Mother"

CABOT Jane Emily Pitkin Yamamoto of Cabot died Aug. 17, 2007. She was born in Burlington, March 23, 1926, the daughter of Royce S. and Helen Kathleen (McKelvey) Pitkin who resided in Hyde Park at the time. She attended the public schools of New London, N.H., City of Barre, and graduated in 1943 from Plainfield High School. She was employed in Cleveland, Ohio, 1943-44 at Glenn L. Martin Co. as aircraft parts inspector. She began undergraduate studies in 1944 at Goddard College and later at the University of California in Berkeley and was the recipient of a BA degree at Goddard in 1948. She met Thomas Shuzo Yamamoto in Berkeley in 1946 and they were married in New York City in July 1947. She did graduate study at Columbia University, Royal Danish Academy of Art, University of Vermont and University of Hawaii, where in 1989 she was awarded the degree Master of Urban and Regional Planning. Following her graduation from Goddard in 1948, they moved to New York City, and she worked as a planner for Bedford, N.Y. In 1950 they sailed to Italy which was followed by a move to Morocco where they worked for a year at Atlas Construction before driving northward to Sweden where daughter Gemma was born 1953. They subsequently moved to Denmark where their first son Paul was born in 1956. Jane returned with the children to Vermont in 1958 and Bruce Jiro was born in 1959 in Barre. Tom joined them soon after in Marshfield and the children attended Twinfield schools. In addition to raising three young children, Jane taught school, worked at Central Planning (State Planning Office), and in Marshfield served as a trustee of the Jacquith Public Library, as a member of the Marshfield Planning Commission, and was involved in the creation of what became the Senior Center. She was a strong advocate for the underdog and did not hesitate to speak out in their behalf. In 1971 the family moved to Alicante, Spain, residing there until returning to Marshfield where Paul and Jiro graduated from Twinfield High School. In 1978 Jane and Tom moved to American Samoa where he taught at the Community College of American Samoa for two years before settling in Honolulu, Hawaii, where they lived and worked until 2004. Tom continued his work in the fine arts and Jane worked for the Hawaii National Guard as a hazardous waste specialist. Their final move was to Cabot in the fall of 2004. Jane is survived by her daughter Gemma Yamamoto and husband Grant McClellan and their children Levi and Maria, of Cabot; Paul Yamamoto and Lisa North, children Sean and Todd Yamamoto and Vedan North, also of Cabot; and by Jiro Yamamoto of San Francisco, Calif. Other survivors are her brother Ronald Pitkin, five first cousins, niece Sarah Roos, and nephews Caleb, Seth and Aaron Pitkin. She was predeceased by her parents Royce and Helen Pitkin, by Tom, her husband of 57 years, and by her brother Belmont. A celebration of her life will take place Saturday afternoon, Nov. 10, 2007, at 2 p.m. at the Plainfield Friends Meeting House on Martin Meadow Road in Plainfield Village where all are welcome to participate. Jeanette Pitkin was born on 7 March 1831. She died on 31 October 1920 at the age of 89 in Winchendon, Massachusetts. Jeanette married Joseph W. Stone (b. 2/17/1818) on 8/8/1883. He was a merchant in West Newton, Massachusetts. If this marriage date is correct, the bride and groom would have been aged 52 and 65, respectively. Jeanette was a graduate of West Newton Normal School. No children. After his death, Jeanette lived with her sister Electa in Winchendon, MA. Parents: Harry Pitkin and Minerva Hand.
