He resided for two years in Winnebago City, Minnesota, and then returned to Marshfield where he was a farmer on the old Dan Bemis farm and later at the farm now owned (1997) by Susannah Clifford and Tom Blachly. He married second, in 1921, Flora Belle (Stoner) Bliss, widow of Albert N. Bliss. He was a man of great physical strength. After retiring from farming, he and Flora moved to Marshfield village where they raised chickens.

She was for many years the town librarian in Plainfield, Vermont.

Mary Paige was born on 23 April 1842 in Greensboro, Vermont. She died on 25 May 1908 at the age of 66 in Cabot, Vermont. "The community was saddened Sunday morning when it learned of the death of Mrs. Byron Lance. Mrs. Lance had been in her usual health until about a week ago when her heart began to trouble her, but she kept about the house and was hopeful even to the last that she would be better soon. She began to fail at about 10 oclock Saturday night and grew worse rapidly until the end came at quarter of one. Funeral services were held at the house Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. F.E. Currier. The floral display was beautiful, one of the finest ever seen in town. She leaves to mourn her loss a husband, four sons, Henry of Rocky Ford Colorado, Dr. A. J. Lance of Portsmouth, N.H., W.B. Lance of this place, Rev. C. D. Lance of Newport, Vt; and two daughters, Mrs. Fred Marsh and Miss Cora Lance, who was a teacher in Hardwick high school but has now resigned her position. to these we extend the sympathy of the entire community.
Mrs. Mary Paige Lance was born in Greensboro April 23, 1842. Her mother died when Mrs. Lance was only six years old and two years later her father moved to Cabot, [She married Byron J. Lance] Jan 20, 1863 and six children were born to them."

"Soldiers of 1812 - Lewis Bemis, a brother of three of these [Marshfield] soldiers, was also from this town, though he enlisted from Barnet. His father and friends all resided here, and he should have a notice here. He belonged to the old 4th regiment, which was sent out under Col. Miller to the then territory of Ohio, to look after the Indians who were making depredations on the frontier settlements. At one time they came to the dwelling of a Mr. Harriman, (whose wife was the daughter of Alexander [sic] Parker of Montpelier, and sister of Mrs. James Pitkin of this town,) just about an hour after the savages had murdered and left him and his family. They pressed on, but failed to overtake the Indians, and soon after joined the main body under the infamous Gen. Hull on its way to Fort Detroit. Parents: Nathaniel Parker.
