From Child's Gazetteer: "Albert, the fifth son, served his early years, and up to the time of his majority, on his father's farm, attending the common and select schools, with one term at Peacham Academy, and spending the winter months for five seasons in teaching district schools. In April, 1845, at the age of twenty-two, he was married to irene Davis Rich, daughter of Capt. Samuel Rich and Dolly Davis, his wife, into whose service he enlisted, taking charge of the saw-mill and grist-mill at East Calais. In the year 1850 the estate, together with the mills belonging to Samuel Rich, came ito his possession by purchase. During this ownership of the mills lumbering was made a specialty. In 1856, having disposed of his mill property, he gave more attention to general farming; and in 1860, in connection with farming, he engaged in mercantile and produce business in his country village, at which business he continued for twenty years.
"Mr. Dwinell was chosen to represent his town in the General Assembly in 1860 and 1861. In July, 1862, he enlisted in the service of his country, under General P. P. Pitkin, in the quartermaster's department, and reported for duty at Harrison's Landing when General McClellan was in command of the Army of the Potomac. He served in this capacity until obliged by sickness to leave the service. He was elected state senator in 1878, and re-elected in 1880. In the latter year he was chairman of the Grand List committee, and was one of the special commission appointed to formulate and introduce a bill to equalize taxation, resulting in the bill reported by that commission, and the establishing of the present tax law, to regulate taxation, known as the tax law of 1880. In January, 1881, Mr. Dwinell was commissioned by Gov. Farnham one of three state appraisers to appraise railroad beds, trestles, and bridges, so that they be set in the Grand Lists of their respective towns for the purpose of taxation. In January, 1882, he was re-appointed on the same state board of railroad appraisers. Mr. Dwinell and wife now (1888) reside on the same homestead they occupied at the time of their marriage." Amos Dwinell was born on 22 January 1818 in Marshfield, Vermont. Hi Ola Dwinell wrote in 1943: "Uncle Amos Dwinell at some time moved to Morrisville. This has nothing to do with the matter at hand . . . . but I can't help but say he was the finest looking Dwinell I have ever seen; broad chested with a hat a full size larger than my father's. He was also the best singer I have ever heard of any name. Had a full rich musical voice which he used without affectation or effort. Played the cello. Gave his to Sim. Think Gilbert borrowed it dont know what ever became of it from that. He was a firm believer, a fundamentalist. Always said grace at our house. Father being a liberal, religion was never made the topic of conversation. He was a stickler for deportment and did not hesitate to correct me in a very friendly and gentle way. He was held in high esteem in Morrisville, affiliated with the Christian church, was always called by the townspeople Deacon Dwinell. I was told that he put much money into the church as a loan which he never got back. He had a little land, kept one horse, a couple of cows, a few hens. This in the village outskirts. He had a good chance to sell but hesitated to change his residence to Stowe where he could buy at an advantage as he reasoned he had always paid taxes in Morristown he thought it would be fairer if he should become a public charge to fall to that town. He was prevailed to make the change and made the grade. Left Aunt Nancy enough so she made a will. Father made it and I witnessed it. I never knew who she left it to. There couldn't have been much when she got through. After Uncle Amos died Aunt Nancy went to Orlando's (Gerry) and died there. Father went up and stayed the last week or so that Uncle A. lived and they were both brought back to the Dwinell cemetery. I don't think Aunt Nancy's will was ever probated. It very likely left all to Orlando. Think Father took his big wagon and brought the body back but its a good while to remember. . . . Aunt Nancy (Orcutt) was a very sweet old lady and they were a very devoted couple."
