He was on his way to the home of his son Jacob, when his oxen were spooked. They were hitched together with a mare. John attempted to get the horse under control, but was thrown to the ground and run over by the cart. His leg was broken and his body bruised so that he was taken for dead, and carried to the house of his daughter, where he came back to life, but died again a short time later. He was buried on 18 August 1659. John Drake was one of the proprietors of Taunton, Massachusetts.
