Royce Pitkin wrote of Frank Brown in 1935; "With the assistance of his family of six boys he cleared the fields of their granite boulders and surrounded them with rod upon rod of straight and true stone walls. Only those who have actually participated in that type of work can appreciate the hours of strain and toil that went into the clearing of those fields.
"About a dozen years ago, after all the boys had grown up and left home and his massive frame was badly bent and pained with rheumatism, Frank gave up the farm for an easier but very short life in the village. There his wife survives him and supports herself by running a modest tourist home."

And so did his wife.
"Henry's barn, though needing repairs, still houses a dairy of twenty cows and a pair of well fed horses. But the combined labors of the family have been insufficient to make the old farm yield a decent living. The taxes are paid but no improvements are made on the buildings, the mortgage is not reduced, ordinary comforts - even necessities - are denied the family, and the cattle dealer manages to keep a hold on a portion of the monthly milk check so that even that is not always available for the multiplicity of needs of the Browns. Henry has been a hard worker, his vices are few, he is honest and capable, but at fifty he sees nothing ahead but days of toil and a never lightening burden of debt. Who is it who says that all is well with our economic system?"
