Daniel Bemis Sr. was born on 13 April 1755 in Paxton, Massachusetts. He died on 23 January 1843 at the age of 87 in Marshfield, Vermont. He was buried in Marshfield, Vermont. Daniel Bemis, Sr. enlisted in the Revolutionary Army August 5, 1777, in Capt. John Wood's company, Col. L. Baldwin's regiment (26th of the line). He and Martha moved from Paxton, Massachusetts to Croyden, New Hampshire in 1794. Late in life, they came to Marshfield, Vermont and lived with Daniel, Jr. on Knob Hill. Hannah Pitkin wrote for Hemenway's Gazetteer that "Universalism was introduced into [Marshfield] by Daniel Bemis, a Revolutionary soldier, who moved here from Connecticut in 1809."

"Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress on the 7th of June, 1832, State of Vermont, County of Washington: On this 7th day of August A.D.1832 personally appeared in open court before the Honorable County Court, within the County of Washington now sitting, Daniel Bemis, a resident of Marshfield in the County of Washington and State of Vermont, aged 77 years, who being first durly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress, passed June 7, 1832
That he entered the service of the United States under the following officers and served as herein stated,

That in the latter part of January or first part of February in 1776 at Paxton in the County of Worester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, he enlisted for 3 months into Capt. Seth Washburns Company of the Mass. line of Militia Troop, that he immediately mustered and was marched to Dorchester, Mass. during the term of 3 months he was stationed at what is called Dorchester Point and the vicinity of that place - that the British then occupied. Boston and there ships lay in the harbour, that on the night the Brittish ___ Boston, Capt. Libbys Company was stationed on the Point. That they had fires built and that the British fired upon them as they pupped. The Surgion of the Regiment whose name was Dolbey and one Wakefield were both killed by one ball as they stood together by the same fire. We think Dolbey was a Resident of Winchenden or Templeton, Mass. We think his Col. name was Whitney and Lieut. Col. Tinkey. He says that his Capt.(_____ afterwards became Colonel. He declares that he served faithfully this position) of his internship which was three months and was then discharged at Dorchester as he thinks by a verbal dismissal together with others whose periods of inlistments then expired. He further declares that in the month of December 1777 at Paxton aforesaid he inlisted into Capt. Ralph Earls Company of Mass. Military for three months. Col. Sparhawk of Templeton, Mass. Commander of the Regiment. Lieut. Col. Grant of Peterham. Major Minion The Surgeons name was Cosby that he mustered at Liecester, Mass - marched to Danbury, Conn, remained a few days then we crossed the North River at a place called Kings Ferry and continued to march to Fort ______there remained a short time. Thence to Morristown in the State of New Jersey. Then on to a place called Bound Brook in the State of New Jersey at which place he faithfully served out the time of inlistment which was 3 months, recollects while he was at Bound Brook of a skimmish between the Americans and Hessians in which several of his Company were wounded among them was one Guide Grigs - Drummer who was wounded in the arm by a musket ball - a number of horses and two Hessians Prisoners were taken by them in the skimmish after the expiration he had an honorable verbal discharge. He also further declairs that in August 1778 at Paxton before mentioned the then said Daniel Bemis inlisted for 6 months under he same mentioned Capt. Ralph Earl - mustered at Liecaster, Mass - was stationed at ______ __________about one month. Thense marched to a place called Little Campton, Rhode Island was there stationed about 5 months --- during the time was stationed at Little Campton an expedition under Gen. Spencer was undertaken for the purpose of taking Newport Island as it was called from the British, that the Troops at that plan were marched to Toglin Ferry in the night for the purpose of crossing and that he among others were enacted as a Front Guard and had actually given orders to imbank when the army commenced a fire from the Solona(?). Shattered one boat, killed one oarman, and wounded another upon which a retreat was ordered and made that at the time his 6 months inlistment expired he was at ______________. His officers in the Hospital visiting a Brother of his who belonged to the Army and said ship that _________6 months he said from Capt. Earle permission to return home with his Brother and are on ____ he did. He also declares that a short time previous the surrender of Gen. Boyoget at Paxton aresaid volunteered under (2 lines blacked out) as far as Bennington, VT at which place he and several others were taken sick with the measles and remained according to his recollection about 3 weeks after his recovery he heard the news of the Captulantion (?) and had orders to return home. In answer to the question prepared by the Hon. Secretary after he states he supposed he was born at Leocaster, Worcester Co., Mass Sept. 20, 1755. That he has no knowledge of any record of his age. That he lived in Paxton at each time of his going into the Service that after he came out of the service he continued to reside in said Paxton until he was 42 years old. From that place at that time he removed to Newport, NH and remained there 12 years and then he removed to Marshfield, VT where he was ever since and now resident. That he has not at this time any recollection of ever having received a written discharge from the Service. That he does not now know of any living _____to his actual services in the Army of the Revolution and that he has not written testimony of the ____ other than the Applicant of ____ Pike which is here unto affices - That he does not recollect the name of any enlisted officers who served when he was stationed excepting Gen. Spencer at Settle Compton and no other Military Officers than those before named. He states the names of John Capron (Clergyman) and Stephen Pitkin Esq. who can testify as to his credability and there belief of his services as a soldier of the Revolution." Daniel Bemis Jr. was born on 31 December 1797 in Newport, New Hampshire. He died on 11 June 1876 at the age of 78 in Marshfield, Vermont. Died of Bright's disease. He was buried in Marshfield, Vermont. Dan came to Marshfield about 1806 and was a farmer on Nob Hill, where Frank Harris lived in 1940. In 1855, he, together with Edwin Pitkin, Jonathan Goodwin, Abijah Hall, and others founded the Universalist Society of Liberal Christianity of Marshfield.
