He was an imposing figure, being very heavy, and he had the means to dress well. He had a large comfortable house built for his family in New Britain, Connecticut. He lost his wealth speculating on a gold mine. He was an early devotee of the automobile, owning a Thomas Flyer as early as 1905. This car was overhauled in 1909 and was one of the first automobiles to ascend Mount Washington. A photograph was taken of the family in the car at the top of the mountain.

Norton of Hartford," says the Gorham, NH Mountaineer, "who went up with a load of seven persons and about 250 pounds of baggage. Mr. Norton not only climbed the mountain to the usual stopping place at the first landing, but also climbed the 28 percent hill of about 100 yards to the second landing, an altitude never before reached by a large touring car. The whole trip was accomplished without the necessity of any of the party leaving the car and without injury to the automobile in the least." "

Natalie was born into an affluent family and grew up accustomed to a lifestyle very different from that of her first husband, Lou Blachly. Her father later lost most of his money speculating on a gold mine, and for Natalie's last years living with her parents, the family lived in more modest circumstances. At the age of 18, Natalie spent nine months studying in Paris. Natalie seems always to have maintained a cheerful and optimistic disposition. When Lou was away during the war, Natalie worked as a model, oversaw the liquidation of Lou's bankrupt business, provided for her two children (although her son Bill was away at school and in the Navy for most of that time), carried on a very active social life, and wrote to Lou on a regular basis. Lou, however, for his part, did not keep up the correspondance, and was unable to provide much financial assistance to Natalie and the children. The war years were very hard on the Blachly family. In his autobiography, Lou summed up the situation this way, "I had been gone a year and a half down south where my family couldn't come because the children were in private school, practically two years in Africa and the Middle East, two and one-half years in Germany, and after a while my lovely, beautiful wife decided she didn't have a husband after all, and a very charming and wealthy doctor came along and wooed her and won her, and we were separated." The doctor was Frank McLaughlin, Natalie's second husband. Frank was devoted to Natalie, and was able to offer her the kind of life she had known as a young girl. Frank was also very generous with the Blachly children. After his death, Natalie was married a third and final time to Larry Sloan, also a doctor. They purchased a summer house near Adamant, Calais, Vermont and spent much time with Natalie's children and grandchildren. Lou and Natalie continued to correspond after their divorce, and remained close friends until Lou died in 1965. Parents: Lucius Bernard Norton and Ida May Cleveland.
