Daniel Webster Pitkin was born on 21 July 1833 in Marshfield, Vermont. He died on 17 March 1862 at the age of 28 in Calais, Vermont. In 1858, the year of his marriage, Daniel was a merchant in East Calais, Vermont in partnership with his brother Levi. Their store was approximately where the East Calais Village Store now is. In the membership role of the Universalist Society of Liberal Christianity of Marshfield, he is listed as Webster Pitkin (about 1855). In 1850 he attended Peoples Acadamy in Morrisville. The census of 1860 shows him and his wife Sarah living at home in Marshfield with his parents as a farmer. He was apparently the prudential committee for one of the schools in Marshfield or Calais in 1859 when he was a defendant in a case brought before the Vermont Supreme Court of Washington County (now called the Superior Court, I think). He had expelled a boy from school for refusing to complete the requirement to write compositions. Daniel held that the student might be allowed to remain in school if the boy's father requested an exception, which the father refused to do. The court sided with Daniel. The case is known as Guernsey v. Pitkin. In November of 1853 Daniel purchased from his brother Levi a sawmill built by their father in 1848. This mill was on Beaver Meadow Brook about where Beaver Meadow Road meets John Tibbitts Road. Daniel sold the mill in November 1856 to J. S. Boyaton (possible transcribing error in the spelling of this name). It is not known how long the mill remained on the brook, but by 1870 the site was referred to in another deed as "the old saw mill ground". Parents: Edwin Pitkin and Olive Dwinell.
