The marriage record of Mary Tierney and George Dorman lists her father as Augustus Tierney. A marriage index England and Wales, 1837-1915 lists an Augustine Teerney, married in March of 1853 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England. An 1861 census of Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England list Agustine Tierney, 33, a mason's labourer born in Ireland. His household at 11 Rosemary Lane included wife Mary, 39, born Ireland, daughter Mary, 10, a scholar, born Huddersfield, and daughter Margaret, 7, born Huddersfield. August and Mary Tierney are listed as passengers on the ship City of London, arriving in NY on 24 Aug. 1869 from Liverpool. His age is given as 42. Hers as 45. This puts August's birth date about three years earlier than the birthdate of Augustine Tierney in the 1900 census. Also note there is no child Mary listed. However, we know from the 1900 census of North Kingston, RI that Mary, daughter of Augustine and Mary Tierney immigrated in 1870, and that her father Augustine immigrated in 1869. It seems that Mary came to the US a year after her parents. An 1872 city directory of New York lists an Augustine Tierney, colorer, at 439 W 31st St. The 1880 census of New York City lists Augustus Tierney, 55, at 439 W. 31st St. Born Ireland, both parents born Ireland, occupation Color maker. Date of birth, Aug. 1830. He and both his parents were born in Ireland. He came to the United States in 1869. Spouse: Mary Johnson. Mary Johnson and Augustine Tierney were married in March 1853 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England. A marriage was registered in the name of Augustine Teerney in Huddersfield in March of 1853. Could this be a delayed civil registration of a church marriage that occurred several years earlier? Birth dates of daughters Mary and Margaret suggest that the marriage took place in 1850 or earlier. Children were: Mary Agnes Tierney, Margaret Tierney. Margaret Tierney was born in 1853 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England. She died. A birth index for England and Wales lists a record for a Margaret Tierney born in the last quarter of 1853 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England. I have inferred that Margaret married someone named Williams, because in the 1880 federal census of New York City, the household of Margaret's parents, Augustine and Mary Tierney included their daughter Mary (single), and a granddaughter, Cassidy Williams, aged 2, born Rhode Island. A Margaret Tierney, born abt 1852 in Ireland married Denis Williams and had children Mary, Ella, Maggie, Joseph, and Alice. Maggie was born in 1878, about the same time as the Cassidy Williams mentioned above. Could be a census recording error? This family lived in Ohio. Parents: Augustine Tierney and Mary Johnson. Spouse: Dennis Williams. Margaret Tierney and Dennis Williams were married on 4 September 1872 in Clark County, Ohio. From marriage record. Children were: Mary Williams, Ella Williams, Margaret (Maggie) Williams, Joseph Williams, Alice Williams. |
