The senior member of the firm of Charles Heilborn & Son was born in Berlin, Germany, on the 10th day of February, 1824. In the year 1845 he determined to come to the United States and located at Cincinnati, where he engaged in his life business, the furniture trade. Later he removed to Mankato, Minn., where he started the manufacture of furniture, employing as many as 50 men in his factory. Here he was married to Miss Alma Dornberg. During the Civil war he served with distinction as second lieutenant of volunteers. In 1874 he removed to Portland, and since 1876 has been a resident of Astoria, and engaged in the furniture business. In 1878 Mr. Heilborn was elected county treasurer, defeating Judge C. H. Page, and continuing two terms in office.
Chas. Heilborn Jr. was born in Portland September 14, 1875. He became a member of the firm in 1896, and since that time, owing to his father being disabled by paralysis, the active management of the firm has devolved upon him. That merit of public confidence is a family trait is evidenced by the fact that Charles Jr. now also holds the office of county treasurer. The firm of Chas. Heilborn & Son has long been the leader in the furniture trade in Astoria, always displaying a stock in keeping with the progress of styles and demands, and turning out goods of a superior grade in the lines manufactured here. Charles Melchior Heilborn⁴³ was born on 10 September 1869 in Birmingham, England. He died in October 1936 at the age of 67 in East Providence, Rhode Island. Charles practiced as a chiropodist and podiatrist in Providence, where he had an office and shoe store. Although he was well liked and highly respected in his community, Charles was not remembered fondly in his family after his death. Two of his granddaughters, Clo and Nancy (Mary Ann) described him as a manipulative and belligerent man. One of his few means of expressing affection was to buy things for people. Once he bought a car for his daughter, Marjorie, and then got angry with her for being so slow to learn to drive. Marjorie remembered that at the age of 3 or 4 she knew that she did not like her father. She described him as having a terrible temper and although he provided everything his family could want materially, he controlled and dominated the family. It was the family's habit to have a big Sunday dinner. Charles would purchase very expensive gourmet food for the meal, but then later would complain that people were eating him out of house and home. Charles had a grandson, Robby Gillis. There was no hot running water in the Gillis household when Robby was young, so his mother, Gladys, would bring him to her father's house to bathe in Charles' tub. Once, upon seeing Robby lathering himself in the tub, Charles is said to have remarked, "Jesus Christ, every time I turn around that kid is costing me money." Charles was emphatically anti-semitic, and ironically, Nancy discovered years after Charles' death that Leopold Heilborn (Charles' grandfather) and his descendants who remained in Germany were Jews. This information was kept from all of Charles' grandchildren during their childhood. At some time Charles changed his middle name from Melchior to Theodore (Carl Theodor Heilborn was the name of one of his uncles). This may have been an attempt to conceal his Jewish roots. It is interesting to note that Charles married into a well established Anglo-saxon protestant family, and that all of his children married Irish-Catholics. Charles died of kidney disease. At the time of his marriage to Grace his occupation was jeweller.

According to his naturalization record, Charles arrived in New York on May 22, 1881 and was naturalized a U.S. citizen on Oct 18, 1919.

His life hung in the balance for the last days. Finally his fight ended and he went over into a better life. Mr. Heilborn was born in London 41 years ago last October 26th. His father, Franz F. and his mother, Antoinette, educated a family of 6 children. One of them, a boy, died when he was very young. Leopold was educated in the King Edward school in Birmingham and learned the jewellers business from his father. When he was 20 years of age his family went to America and settled in Philadelphia. They only stayed for a short time and moved to North Attleboro and settled finally in Plainfield. Leopold got a job at H.F. Barrows & Co. and his enormous ability of design made his work very precious. He worked as a designer at F.S. Gilbert and at Sandland, Capron & Co. and then his own company, Leo A. Heilborn. This company only lived 8 months when he became a member of the Codding Bros. Company in December 1891. The quick growth of this group was due to his skills and intelligence and the company was registered and Codding and Heilborn some years later. He was a man who added precise knowledge and enormous skills as a designer to his business and with this last ability he found a wide range of activity. In January 1887 he married Mary Adelaide Cobb in Plainfield. He was a member of the former masters of the Bristol Lodge F. & A. M., high priest of the King Hiram Royal Arch Chapter, he had an eminent office in Attleboro council R. & S.M., he was the former commander in chief of the Bristol Commandery K.T. headmaster and had an office in the Grand Council. So he had excellent skills, he never wanted extra duties, but he lived a quiet life that was dedicated to his family. As he had a cheerful character and a sympathetic nature he was loved by everyone who got in touch with him. His mother, a sister, Mrs. George Corbett in Providence, three brothers Arnold & Carl in Providence & Franz in Plainfield and his wife outlived him. The funeral takes place on Thursday two o'clock from his flat. Reverend Frank L. Masseck from Spencer will do the funeral and the Apollo Quartet will sing. The funeral will take place in Plainfield (Plainville).

The name Heilborn is a derivative of Heilprin which comes from the town of Heilbronn in Wurttemberg. Jewish families with variations of the Heilprin spelling may not necessarily have common family backgrounds. Many of the Jews of Austria, Germany, and Russia indiscriminately assumed their family names when ordered to do so about 1800. Such seems to be the case with Leopold Augustin Heilborn. According to the church records of Munster Liebfrauen, he was baptized in 1812 and given the name Leopoldus Augustinus Heilborn. The family tradition is that he was Jewish and before his baptism was referred to as Salomon. He may have been given the name "Heilborn" (Faith-healer) for the performance of some good deed early in his life (according to Hanne-lore Heilborn).

My DNA profile indicates I am 3% European Jewish. Assuming no "non-paternity events", I would have inherited about 3% of my DNA from Leopold Augustin Heilborn. It is unlikely then, that his wife, nor the wives of any of his male descendants in my line, were of European Jewish descent.
