Robert Lance and his family moved to Cabot from Chester, New Hampshire in 1804. He built the first cider mill in Cabot in 1819. Cider began to rival potato whiskey as the preferred refreshment in town at about this time, and both cider and whiskey sold for about $3.00 per barrel. According to Hemenway's history of Washington County, Robert did the first teaming to Boston from Cabot. His team was two yoke of oxen, his freight was salts, whisky, and pork. It took 4 to 6 weeks to make a round trip, and he usually make 2 trips a year. Robert represented Cabot in the State Legislature in 1839 and 1840.

bullet Walter Byron LANCE Photo was born on 12 Oct 1872 in Cabot, Vermont. He died on 11 Apr 1929. Walter Lance was educated in the public schools and at Montpelier seminary. He served as superintendant of schools in Cabot for five years, postmaster for 14 years, and justice of the peace for 20 years. In 1915 he was elected to represent Cabot in the Legislature,and also became superintendant of schools in the Washington Central District (Vermont). He moved to Plainfield late in 1915 and lived there until his death. He was a leader in church work, was well known as a tenor singer, and was a leader of the Cabot band..
