Charles Melchior Heilborn(41) was born on 10 Sep 1869 in Birmingham, England. He died in Oct 1936 in East Providence, Rhode Island. Charles practiced as a chiropodist and podiatrist in Providence, where he had an office and shoe store. Although he was well liked and highly respected in his community, Charles was not remembered fondly in his family after his death. Two of his granddaughters, Clo and Nancy (Mary Ann) described him as a manipulative and belligerent man. One of his few means of expressing affection was to buy things for people. Once he bought a car for his daughter, Marjorie, and then got angry with her for being so slow to learn to drive. Marjorie remembered that at the age of 3 or 4 she knew that she did not like her father. She described him as having a terrible temper and although he provided every thing his family could want materially, he controlled and dominated the family. It was the family's habit to have a big Sunday dinner. Charles would purchase very expensive gourmet food for the meal, but then later would complain that people were eating him out of house and home. Charles had a grandson, Robby Gillis, who was considered an unfortunate child; not good looking, and not very bright (although later in life he became a very wealthy man). There was no running water in the Gillis household when Robby was young, so his mother, Gladys, would bring him to her father's house to bathe in Charles' tub. Once, upon seeing Robby lathering himself in the tub, Charles is said to have remarked, "Jesus Christ, every time I turn around that kid is costing me money." Charles was emphatically anti-semitic, and ironically, Nancy discovered years after Charles' death that Leopold Heilborn (Charles' grandfather) and his descendants who remained in Germany were Jews. This information was kept from all of Charles' grandchildren during their childhood. At some time Charles changed his middle name from Melchior to Theodore (Carl Theodor Heilborn was the name of one of his uncles). This may have been an attempt to conceal his Jewish roots. It is interesting to note that Charles married into a well established Anglo-saxon protestant family, and that all of his children married Irish-Catholics. Charles died of kidney disease. At the time of his marriage to Grace his occupation was jeweller.

From "The Official Book of the Boston Terrier" by Muriel P. Lee: "Heilborn's Raffles, whelped in 1905, was dark in color (offsetting some of the many golden brindles coming out of Cracksman), small in size and excelled in quality. He sired many champions, but of particular note were his descendants, Ch. Mosholu Blink and Woodward Captain, both of whom, in turn, produced many champions and top-winning dogs. E. J. Rousuck, who wrote "The Boston Terrier" in 1926, dedicated his book to Raffles: 'To Heilborn's Raffles, who helped revolutionize the breed from its chaotic mixture of types to its present nearly perfect standardization.' Although there were other dogs that were used for stud, these particular dogs were considered to be the cornerstones of the breed."

Leopold Alexander HEILBORN was born on 26 Oct 1860 in London, England. He died about 1903 in Massachussetts. Obituary translated from German:
The friends of Mr. Leopold Alexander Heilborn, and he has got legions of them, were extremely touched when they heard about his death yesterday noon. He was confined to bed for weeks. His life hung in the balance for the last days. Finally his fight ended and he went over into a better life. Mr. Heilborn was born in London 41 years ago last October 26th. His father, Franz F. and his mother, Antoinette, educated a family of 6 children. One of them, a boy, died when he was very young. Leopold was educated in the King Edward school in Birmingham and learned the jewellers business from his father. When he was 20 years of age his family went to America and settled in Philadelphia. They only stayed for a short time and moved to North Attleboro and settled finally in Plainfield. Leopold got a job at H.F. Barrows & Co. and his enormous ability of design made his work very precious. He worked as a designer at F.S. Gilbert and at Sandland, Capron & Co. and then his own company, Leo A. Heilborn. This company only lived 8 months when he became a member of the Codding Bros. Company in December 1891. The quick growth of this group was due to his skills and intelligence and the company was registered and Codding and Heilborn some years later. He was a man who added precise knowledge and enormous skills as a designer to his business and with this last ability he found a wide range of activity. In January 1887 he married Mary Adelaide Cobb in Plainfield. He was a member of the former masters of the Bristol Lodge F. & A. M., high priest of the King Hiram Royal Arch Chapter, he had an eminent office in Attleboro council R. & S.M., he was the former commander in chief of the Bristol Commandery K.T. headmaster and had an office in the Grand Council. So he had excellent skills, he never wanted extra duties, but he lived a quiet life that was dedicated to his family. As he had a cheerful character and a sympathetic nature he was loved by everyone who got in touch with him. His mother, a sister, Mrs. George Corbett in Providence, three brothers Arnold & Carl in Providence & Franz in Plainfield and his wife outlived him. The funeral takes place on Thursday two o'clock from his flat. Reverend Frank L. Masseck from Spencer will do the funeral and the Apollo Quartet will sing. The funeral will take place in Plainfield (Plainville).
Leo was naturalized on Nov. 19, 1887. The card of record records his date of birth as Oct 26, 1860, England, and his current address as Plainville. Parents: Franz Xaver Ferdinand (Alibone) Heilborn and Marie Antoinette KNEPEURING.
He was married to Mary Adelaide COBB on 1 Jan 1887 in Wrentham, Massachusetts. Marriage records of Wrentham MA.
Leopold Augustin HEILBORN was born in 1792. He died on 4 Mar 1869. A Leopoldus Augustinus Heilborn was baptized in Münster, Westfalen, Preußen, Germany on March 14, 1812
The name Heilborn is a derivative of Heilprin which comes from the town of Heilbronn in Wurttemberg. Jewish families with variations of the Heilprin spelling may not necessarily have common family backgrounds. Many of the Jews of Austria, Germany, and Russia indiscriminately assumed their family names when ordered to do so about 1800. Such seems to be the case with Leopold Augustin Heilborn. According to the church records of Munster Liebfrauen, he was baptized in 1812 and given the name Leopoldus Augustinus Heilborn. The family tradition is that he was Jewish and before his baptism was referred to as Salomon. He may have been given the name "Heilborn" (Faith-healer) for the performance of some good deed early in his life (according to Hanne-lore Heilborn).
He was married to Elizabeth Kleybaumhuter on 24 Apr 1830. Children were: Theresia Benedikta HEILBORN , Johann Andreas Heinrich HEILBORN, Melchior Mathias HEILBORN, Franz Xaver Ferdinand (Alibone) Heilborn.
He was married to Anna Maria Hollmann on 20 Apr 1844.
Leopold Frank HEILBORN was born in Mar 1881 in England. A birth or christening record referenced on Ancestry.com for Leopold Frank Heilborn, son of Arnold Hubert Heilborn and Alice Mary Heilborn. No date. No location other than England. Parents: Arnold Hubbard HEILBORN and Alice Mary Griffiths.
He was married to Maude Church on 10 Oct 1900 in Rhode Island.
Mabel S. HEILBORN was born in Jul 1886 in Massachussetts. Parents: Arnold Hubbard HEILBORN and Alice Mary Griffiths .
Marjorie Berton HEILBORN(43) was born on 28 Nov 1899 in Providence, Rhode Island. She died on 3 Jun 1963 in Providence, Rhode Island. She was buried in Swans Point Cemetery, Providence, Rhode Island. Clo Pitkin recalls of her mother: "Her family lived in upper middle class comfort with a vacation home on Martha's Vineyard and yearly winter trips to Florida. Marjorie was small boned, 5'6" tall and considered quite beautiful as she matured. She spent one year in nursing school when she was about 18. Her father considered nursing undignified and forbid her to stay in school. She met William Dorman when he joined her father's business after returning from the First World War. (Their son) Billy was the adored child of his parents and grandparents. He was often sick with colds and pneumonia and thus many winters were spent in Florida. Marjorie and her family continued to live with her parents during the next eight years. On Jan. 16, 1932 (I) was born. Billy died in May. He was rushed to the hospital in the night and died at the hospital that evening. Although Marjorie spoke very little about the cause of his death, it seems likely that he died as a result of a heart condition. This was, undoubtedly, a time of great grief and emotional turmoil for Marjorie and Bill. He spent much time in Catholic retreats, leaving Marjorie to deal with her grief in her own way. He was a good and caring man but apparently unable to find the inner strength to deal with such a blow. In Aug. 1933 Marjorie's mother, Grace, died of a heart attack. Marjorie was with her when she fell and as Marjorie tried to catch her they fell together on a bed they were making. Once again the family was in mourning. In December Bill was taken to the hospital with a ruptured appendix. He was depressed and grief stricken and it is unclear whether he removed some tubes necessary to his recovery or whether they were removed too soon. He died in the hospital. Marjorie was left with a year-old baby and a father who must have been an emotional drain for her. She never talked about that time and wrote a letter many years later telling me that she was sorry that she could not talk about her husband or her son without pain. Her sister and brother were never able to give emotional support and indeed she was the strength of the family. Her brother Ted took over her father's business and during the next three years she took care of her father who was becoming more and more senile. Her brother, who had control of the family funds, gave her money to move into a small house. These were again emotionally stressful years since her father was reverting to childish behavior and needed constant care. He attacked her if he heard me crying apparently believing that Marjorie was hurting me. He died in Oct. 1936 and Marjorie and I went to live with her brother Ted and his family. We lived with her brother until 1938. At that time Marjorie decided to seek her fortune in California. Hoping to find work and become independent. we travelled by train to Sacramento where we lived with a childhood friend until we found an apartment and a job. Marjorie was determined to become independent and her strength of character and strong will allowed her to believe that she could do anything she wished if she worked at it. She worked at many jobs. She was a single parent without all the support available to single parents today. Although she had many opportunities to remarry, she chose to remain single. She worked all week and was a supportive and wonderful mother. She maintained good relationships with her brother and sister even taking one of her sister's daughters to live with her when her sister could not care for her. In 1947, Marjorie took a position as personnel manager in a department store in Brockton, Mass. She met a woman who became a good friend (Edna Enos Coffin Choo). They were both strong women who felt the need to challenge their intellect. They studied together developing theories of human growth and development, economics, education and anything that intrigued them. They formed a study group called Embrity and had a large following of people. When I went to college in 1949, Marjorie spent one year as a dorm supervisor for nurses (personel director) at Massachusetts General Hospital in order to have a place to live and funds to pay for college tuition. She took a position as Director of Rutland Corner House in Boston which was a halfway house for women who were "unwed mothers" or referred by the courts for misdemeanors. She applied her theories of growth and development and had enough success that she became well known and respected as a consultant. She was still developing ideas and programs and, along with her friend, attracting the attention of faculty and students at Goddard College where I was a student. In 1952 she was introduced to Gerald Staples by a Goddard student, David Sprey. David had taken a job with the Providence Journal and met Jerry who was a reporter in Newport, R.I. Marjorie married Jerry in June 1953. They lived in Newport for a short time and then moved to Riverside where Marjorie took a position as Director of Sophia Little Home for "unwed mothers" She soon made it a well respected halfway and recovery home for women and later an adoption agency as well. Jerry became an editor for the Providence Journal and they moved to Providence. Jerry and Marjorie were well matched intellectually. They both had a well developed sense of humor and were wonderfully happy together for ten years. They had a wide variety of friends both young and old and were interesting and fun to be with. They both enjoyed and delighted in our family, especially their grandchildren, Caleb and Seth. They were exceedingly proud grandparents. In 1960 Jerry became ill and was diagnosed with cancer. He and Marjorie had previously discussed their wills and had talked often about their concern that they be able to control their right to die should they have a terminal disease. In 1961 Jerry was bedridden and needed home nursing. He told Marjorie that he wished to see me, Belmont and the grandchildren to say goodby. Shortly after our visit he wrote a farewell note to Marjorie thanking her for their life and love together and ended his life with dignity. Jerry's death took an enormous toll on Marjorie. She had been diabetic for much of her life and the emotional drain seemed to be too much. Her work was demanding and her reputation in the field of social work had grown. Marjorie was an intelligent, strong woman who had overcome great tragedies, persevered in a society that rejected women in the work place, become a respected expert in the field of social work and education without having a degree or any formal education beyond high school."
Marjorie was active in many social and civic organizations. She had been treasurer of the United Fund Executives and honorary vice president of the New England Citizens' Crime Commission Inc., formerly the New England Watch and Ward Society. In 1963 Marjorie fell and broke her hip. She died from complications of diabeties, having experienced a severe reaction to an antibiotic which had been administered to fight an infection in her broken hip.
