Entries in an account book from 1873 indicate that Addie took in borders on a regular basis, and prepared meals for them. She also occasionally worked out of the home for short periods of time. Addie had an "Aunt Rowley" who was referred to in a number of letters she received during the 1860's. This was her mother's sister Catherine. Addie wrote the following letter at North Attleboro on September 11, 1865: "My dear Husband, As Tinny (her daughter Ida) has gone to ride with Willie as far as Mrs. Cheever's I thought I would improve the time to write to you as I felt too tired last evening. We arrived here safe & sound last Thrusday about 1/4 before 1 Oclk. The stage stopped at the gate but there was no one any where round to meet me. I thought it was very strange but upon getting into the house I found out the reason. They knew nothing about my coming. Lizzie (Eliza, Robert's sister) had not got Tommie's (Robert's brother?) letter and has not got it yet so they were not expecting me but thought when the stage stopped it was company for the people up stairs. but they were glad to see me, and it is just as you said about Tinnie they all want to do everything for her and would hold her and pet her if she would let them but she says "way" to them. Grandma gets everything for her to play with that she can find. she took care of her yesterday while I went to church, and when I got home Tinnie was asleep and Grandma was sitting by the bed brushing away the flies. they have no misquitoes here but a great many flies. Emmeline (Robert's sister) thinks Tinnie is very interesting and takes a good deal of notice of her. Tinnie has taken a great fancy to Billy (Robert's brother) she wants to go to him as soon as he comes in. I have been to see Dr. Tucker about Tinnie, they all said so much about it, and thought she looked so delicate and weak and wanted I should see him so much that I thought I would go. Lizzie was going to see about your mother. He was pleased to see her walking so nicely and thought she had got along well: he examined her and said there was still a little irritation about the stomach but he could see that she would be better and stronger and have more muscle. he ordered a bottle for her No 86. I met at the Dr's Anna Bennett & Mr. Rogers, Louisa's Husband. They came down here and spent the afternoon. Anna wants me to be sure and come and see them. I told her I was coming. when do you think it is the best time to go before you come or after? I liked the appearance of Mr. Rogers very well. he seems to be a real fine young man. he invited me to come and see them & make them a visit. He & Louisa are going to house keeping. they have taken a house in Franklin. I want you to come up Robbie dear just as soon as you can. therefore I think you had better pay Tommie on the next pay day as you will have more money than on the next after. and perhaps you might want to come up then and would not want to spare it, so I should think you had better pay it next Wednesday. The girls send their love and want you to come as soon as you can. I was quite lonesome last night more so than I have been since I came. I do not know of anything more to write so I will bid you good bye. Give my love to Father & Tommie and accept a large share yourself and some kisses from Tinnie and mamma. Answer soon as you can and tell me when you think you will come and dont work too hard. good bye darling. from you affect wife, Addie."
