"Marshfield, Feb. 29, 1900 - Edward C. Preston, a young man about twenty nine years of age, was instantly killed this morning in a peculiar manner while at work sawing wood about a mile from the village. The cast iron balance wheel on the circular sawing machine burst throwing the cast iron pieces in every direction. One large piece took effect in the left side of Mr. Preston's head and struck with such force that he was thrown to the ground in an unconscious condition. Men were working near him at the time but in spite of anything they, or the physician who was summoned could do, he died in a short time afterward. The machine was run by a gasoline engine and Mr. Preston made a business of going from place to place sawing wood. He is survived by a wife and two children the younger being only about a week old. General sympathy is expressed to the young wife in this her time of extreme sorrow and especially under the existing conditions. A father, mother, brother and sister also survive Mr. Preston." After Marriage in Croyden, they resided there until Jan. 1803, when with his brother-in-law Simeon Dwinell, and their families, they moved to Marshfield with their goods, arriving there Feb. 2. Caleb settled in a log cabin which he had previously built on the farm at the crossroads above the Dwinell Cemetery. Simeon and his family spent the remainder of the winter in a rude bark shanty near where Leo Edson's house now is [Arnold Tibbitts in 1998]. Caleb and Simeon worked in company clearing the farm on which Caleb settled. soon afterwards, they disolved partnership and Caleb moved to the [1998 Ronald Pitkin] farm, while Simeon settled permanently on the farm they had carried on together. These two men raised over 500 bushels of wheat, cut it with sickles, threshed it by hand, and hauled it to Plattsburg, NY, with their teams, receiving 50 cents a bushel for it. 1816 he moved to Calais, and in 1831 to Woodbury."
