Cabot, Vermont

A Collection of Memories From the Century Past

A Publication of the Cabot Oral History Committee

Compiled byJane Brown, Barbara Carpenter, Amanda Legare

Edited by Caleb Pitkin

This volume was published in 1999 (revised and reprinted in 2004) in collaboration with Barbara Carpenter, Amanda Legare, and Jane Brown. These three women formed the nucleus of the Cabot Oral History Committee, a group that conducted nearly 90 interviews with Cabot elders over a five year period.

The purposes of this volume are to present a sampling of the oral history that has been collected during the past several years, to add a visual dimension to these narratives, and to illuminate some of the many cultural changes that have occurred over the past century. This book is not intended to be a history of Cabot. What is presented here is not fact, but opinion - memories.

The Cabot Oral History Committee was formed in 1994 as a continuation of the Cabot Bicentennial Committee. Through fundraising efforts, and with financial support and direction from the Vermont Folklife Center in Middlebury, the committee was able to purchase recorders, transcribers and other necessary materials. Interviews began immediately and continued over the years, conducted primarily by Barbara Carpenter and Amanda Legare. Over time, nearly 90 interviews were recorded, and the work of transcribing them was begun in 1995. Barbara, Amanda, and Jane spent countless hours sifting through the transcripts for the written material in the book and hunting for photographs. Over one thousand images were scanned and archived by Caleb Pitkin, who also did all the layout and editing for this volume. Funding was provided by the Cabot Community Grant Fund, the Cabot Creamery, and Richard Spaulding.
